He hated that dream. And it always came right about this time, the anniversary of
Meirian's death. It was persistent and heart-wrenching. Every year for fifteen years.
WuFei sat up in bed, gasping for breath. Sally slept on, oblivious of her husband's
dreams. WuFei climbed out of bed, and pulled on a pajama top. He glanced once more at
Sally then silently left the bedroom.
The house was dark as he walked through it. He paused to look in on the kids and
continued walking. He wasn't exactly sure where he was going. He slipped some shoes on
and walked out of the house. It had been raining a few hours ago and the grass was still
wet. Heedless of the water, WuFei kept walking.
Not far from the house was a hill that he often went to. It reminded him of where
he and Meirian had spent time, before her death. He had wanted her to be buried there,
among the flowers she had loved so much. The clan master insisted that she be buried in
the clan's official cemetery. Before the colony was destroyed, WuFei had walked to her
grave everyday to put fresh flowers on her grave.
WuFei reached the top of the hill and lay down in the soaking grass. The skies had
cleared and he could see the stars. His mind took him back to the first time he had
actually dared to touch Meirian, and that, at first, was only to kiss her. He had been the
most surprised by his show of emotions, but Meirian had taken the kiss much more
seriously then he had.
The next day, he hadn't known how to act towards her. He felt he had shown her that
he loved her the night before, but did she love him? He never got to ask, because she died
that day. Died in the field where only a few hours ago they had promised themselves to
each other. He could never bring himself to go back there.
WuFei heard a slight noise behind him. He jumped to his feet and turned around,
angry that someone had broken in upon his memories. The person walked out of the mist
that had risen, and WuFei felt his breath catch in his throat.
"Nataku?" he whispered the name that Meirian had insisted on being called. The girl
before him was almost exactly the clone of Meirian. She was wearing the same style of
clothes that Meirian wore, and her black hair was in two small ponytails at the nape of her
neck.
"No, WuFei. I am not Nataku. I am her daughter."
